Love at First Wash
You don't know how much you appreciate something until it's gone. Here, Kristen really appreciates her new washing machine.
We Survived Costco!
We got many curious looks, but we survived our first Costco shopping expedition without mishap.
This past Friday marks two weeks since we returned from Ethiopia with our precious souvenirs. We've heard that every week after adoption tends to be better than the one before, and we're living proof that this is true. Week two saw the kids interacting better with one another, growing more comfortable with our family rules, and sleeping with fewer interruptions.
Week two milestones with the new kids include:
- First outing with everyone, to a nearby park.
- First successful Costco run (Sheba gobbled up all those kids and groceries and made it look easy).
- First "small group" fellowship night (three families with 17 kids total).
- First Sunday morning with our church (the kids did great).
- Samuel's first potty on the toilet (he's clearly had some potty training).
- Our first 19 samples collected (you figure it out).
- Kristen's first African-American hairdo without assistance (she did amazingly well).
- First loads of laundry through our new washing machine.
- First movie night (Wall-E, with popcorn).
The new kids continue to improve with their language, but hand motions and charades are still employed throughout the day. We found an Amharic translation web site that should come in handy, though reading the phonetic pronunciations can be tricky. Samuel uses more words and signs every day, and now has "please', "more" and "thank you" down pat. He's also waving and saying "bye-bye", singing along with music and saying "shhhhh" to quiet his sisters. (Like that's going to work...)
Fevers are gone, noses aren't running as much, and everyone seems to be feeling better. GI problems are still the norm for all three new kids, but we've been able to keep the nastiness from spreading by giving them their own bathroom. It will be very nice when all seven kids can use the same bathroom. Mom and Dad are getting tired of having to share!
Enjoy these pictures. There are more new images in the gallery as well.
