Tales from the Tooth Fairy

The tooth fairy has been busy at our house, raiding the change bucket and flitting from bed to bed in the middle of the night.

There are still "firsts" to celebrate, even when you adopt an older child.

Not to be outdone, Olivia wiggled a tooth free the day after Naomi's fell out.

The tooth fairy is going broke!

Truth be told, I am a lousy tooth fairy. I have never been good at this job and here's why. By the time I get the kids in bed at night, my brain is fried and I have no memory. If I have to wait until the kids are asleep to put money under their pillow, the chances are slim that I will remember to do it. This is where my husband comes riding in on his white horse and saves my bacon almost every time. As soon as he hears that a child has lost a tooth, he goes to the change bucket and gets the quarters and puts them on my pillow. That way, when I crawl in bed, I see the money and remember to do my job!

Our kids don't actually believe in the tooth fairy, but we still talk about her and play the game. It has been fun to introduce her to our new children and watch them process the whole situation. Naomi was the first to lose a tooth. We told her what to do with it and waited eagerly to watch her wake up in the morning and discover her money. She didn't ask any questions about how it got there, she just enjoyed the magic of it all. To give you a glimpse of her sweet spirit, she immediately asked me if she could send the money to her birthmother in Ethiopia. It broke my heart to tell her that we could not do that.

Once Olivia watched Naomi walk through the process, she immediately went to work on her wiggly tooth and successfully yanked it out. Her reaction was very funny when she woke up and found her money. She told Mackenzie, "I put tooth under pillow and it is now money!" She also decided that since it worked once, she would try it again and put the money back under her pillow and pretended to go back to sleep to see if more money would show up. I explained to her how the process works and that I had taken her tooth and given her money. She didn't believe me. I actually had to show her the tooth I had taken to convince her.
