Is It Summer Yet?

We adults loved the long, cool spring. The kids hated the long wait for swimming season!

It was the first day of the 2010 summer swim season, and a good time was had by all.

Now that she's a good swimmer, Jillian has said goodbye to floaties and life vests.

Loren risked his camera to take this shot of Olivia under the waterfall. Is he secretly hoping for a new camera?

We all know that nothing makes for better swimming than some good snacking!

We just came through one of Redding's coolest springs in recorded history. Thank you, God! But what we adults have seen as a blessing, the kids have viewed as an unbearable delay in their swimming season. We're sad to see the onset of triple-digit temps; they're happy to be back in the pool!

Mackenzie, Anneliese and Emily are all strong swimmers, as we've diligently worked to waterproof them as early as they're ready. This year, Jillian, Olivia and Naomi are in swim lessons. We're pretty sure Olivia has never been swimming (her story changes), and we know Naomi has never been in water deeper than the bathtub. So it was fun to see the new girls' reaction to the water. They both took to it with enthusiasm, though Olivia giggled and laughed her way through the whole first lesson. She doesn't care much for water in her ears, so plunging her head under the water bothers her. Good news: the yarn braids are handling swimming lessons just fine.

The real fun swimming is in Grandma and Grandpa B's pool. It seems we spend several days a week in their pool between May and September. This year's season started on June 12th, and the water was still a bit chilly. No matter—the kids had a great time, as you can see from the pictures. I got in and tossed them around as I enjoy doing; Kristen got wet to her waist and decided laying in the sun was more her speed.

Samuel was confident going into the water, but was very clingy for his first 15 minutes or so. After that, he'd hold on a bit more loosely but still wanted to stay close to me or Mackenzie. At one point, he was jumping from the edge of the pool to me. He'd go completely underwater, then pop up with a big smile. Not bad for his first-ever swimming experience.

The blog currently lets me attach just five pictures, but we took more than that. Head on over to the gallery if you want to see them.
