Crash!

In the blink of an eye, fenders are changed forever.

Making New Friends

The police came and moved our meet-and-greet to a nearby parking lot.

I was sitting in traffic enjoying a CD when--crash!--the car lurched forward and I smacked into the car in front of me. Before I knew it, I was having a somewhat dazed meet-and-greet with a few nice ladies right on busy Cypress Avenue. We exchanged names, insurance info, phone numbers. We showed each other pictures of our kids (just kidding).

The minivan behind me didn't stop, and probably hit me doing about 20 mph. The van took the bulk of the damage. My Honda (correction--my in-laws' Honda) got hit pretty hard on the rear end. Bumper, trunk lid and other metal parts will need to be replaced or straightened. The van was a county vehicle, so it was insured.

I'm a little sore, but I'm sure a hot bath and a few pain killers will take care of things. I'm very thankful that there were no serious injuries.

Not to over-spiritualize a fender-bender, but it was a reminder to me that we do not control our own destinies. I wasn't prepared for the impact in the least, wasn't expecting it, and could do nothing to avoid it. I remember being struck (pardon the pun) with how fast it all happened. Things were status quo one second, completely changed the next.

Our circumstances can change in the blink of an eye. Better build your life on something that will never change.
